Living Authentically

It is always encouraging to be someone who is loved, admired and appreciated. Living authentically has its own benefits, but it bears the question, who are we when we are alone? In today's day and age we are constantly being fed different information. Whether it is through social media or other entertainment agendas, the need to feel desired, enough or picture perfect is constantly pressed upon us. Are You Normal’s focus has never been to be just a brand, but a community that allows you to be yourself. We are comfortable with not being normal and you should be able to feel the same.

In this current time period it is becoming more and more daring to stick to those feelings. We are being asked to quarantine ourselves from the outside, giving us time to be alone with our thoughts and fears. This can be a time that makes us feel uneasy and undetermined. We are scared, we are alone, we are growing. Most of us are without jobs and are constantly waiting for a new chapter to open up. According to usafacts.org, more than 600,000 cases of COVID-19 have been documented. With the number increasing, how are we to cope? What are some ways we can stick to our true selves and be people with integrity at home?

We have typed up some ways you can stay sane during this period. These are the steps we are taking to stick to our values and engage in a manner that is always positive.

  1. Call your loved ones. Being alone can be a very scary thing, but thanks to technology we don't have to be technically alone at home. Haven't called your family in awhile? This would be a great time to catch up, talk about your worries and build off of your already important friendships. Call your grandparents and ask them questions. Tell your mom about the project you are working on. Ask that friend to do Yoga with you over FaceTime. There are so many different ways we can communicate without physically being with one another, so do it!
  2. Watch all of those things you haven't had time to watch. You have that show you need to catch up on? Wanna binge a show? This is a time to escape from reality in a sense of learning from other realities. Just like communication, taking a restful break is very beneficial for our mental health. So let that brain stop working and watch all 8 seasons of your favorite show, even if you have already!
  3. Up your physical activity. This is a time where it can be very easy to be completely lazy. Instead of not doing anything until 4pm, get up and do some exercises in the living room, or go lay in the sun. This is also a good time to focus on all those things that maybe you’ve been avoiding—sweat it all out during this time!
  4. Take out your trash, and we don’t mean your actual trash. How many emails do you have? How many embarrassing photos do you have on online that your parents would kill you for? This is a perfect time to delete old things that could be old in your opinion. Go and make your social feed look sexy!
  5. Speaking of sexy, we can all say we are grown adults. If you’re quarantining with your partner, this is a perfect time to spice up the bedroom. Maybe you can try that new position or try something completely new? If you aren’t with a partner alone, maybe spice up your online dating account. No worries either, it’s not like you have to actually go anywhere! Have fun with yourself.
  6. Make art! This is a perfect time for artists to work on those projects they have been putting off. Even if you are not an artist, you can still create. Figure out a puzzle, paint a picture, make some music. There is so much you can do these days with creating and it is now easier than ever. Even download those cheap mobile apps and make yourself a 3D house.
  7. Mediate. This is probably the most important, we think. In this time be sure to stay true to yourself. Lay down in the sun and just reflect on how far you have made it so far. No matter what problems you have faced or are facing, you are here and you made it this far. Don’t ever give up now!

We hope these can help you get through the days a little bit more. There is truly no telling how long we will be in this current state of the world, but we can have confidence in knowing we aren’t doing it alone. Are You Normal is working to make this community strong and we are ready for the day until we can all meet and see each other again. Until then, follow us on Instagram and on here and we will be in touch!
