Accepting Yourself and Your Struggle

Accepting yourself can seem like a very hard thing to do when you say it out loud, but what does that phrase even mean? Acceptance is primarily the ability to accept what is happening around you, or in this case, accepting all the parts you have that make you who you are. This means not just accepting the good parts of your nature, but also the bad ones. This can be very scary when you think about it—I have to accept all of these parts I have, even the ones that I hate?

In our last blog we talked about being authentic and always giving ourselves the space and room to make decisions based on who we are as people. Everything that leads up to this boils down to one realization: self-acceptance can be hard as hell. This isn’t just a problem for physical appearance, but who we are inside as well.

I remember my dad telling me something that sounded simple at the time but now that I am an adult it all makes sense. He told me, “You spend the most time with yourself, so you better get used to that.” Now those words almost haunt me. We are always in our own thoughts, our own dreams and our own desires; Even our wrong-doings—we are always with them. Now understanding this, acceptance and being authentic seems like life-long goals that we have to work on everyday. With all of this being said, we have to break ourselves down and face our trauma.

Acknowledge your reality. Recognize where you are at, what you are doing and who you are with. You worked hard to be where you are, and you should be proud of that.

Handle your trauma. Therapy is an amazing thing and talking to someone who can walk you through this is the best. We all have things that have really messed us up in the head, and it is okay to hurt. But, we don’t want to hurt forever and we can use that hurt to help someone else.

Admit your mistakes. Yes, I was wrong. Say it out loud and learn from it.

Accept that struggle will always be a part of your reality. I mean, everyday we learn something new right? Everyday we are going through a new tribulation. Own your struggle!

We hope that everyday you are able to be in a space to feel loved, heard and seen. Be thankful for what you have and always strive to improve who you are. Now how is that for some acceptance?
